Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between demurrage, detention and storage?
Demurrage is charged by the shipping line when a full container stays in the port or terminal longer than the free time. Detention is charged when the container, usually after collection, is kept outside the terminal and not returned empty in time. Storage is charged by the terminal for the space the container uses after its own free time ends.
How are the chargeable days counted?
By default the arrival day is day 0, so a container that arrives on the 1st and is collected on the 8th has spent 7 days. Some carriers count the arrival day as day 1; switch the day count option to match your tariff. Free days are subtracted and only the remaining days are charged.
Can I enter a tiered tariff?
Yes. Add up to four bands, for example the first 5 chargeable days at one rate, the next 5 at a higher rate, then every day after that at the top rate. Each band is charged only for the days that fall inside it.
Do the free days cover detention as well?
It depends on your contract. The default shares one pool of free days: any days not used at the port also count towards detention. Choose separate free time to give detention and terminal storage their own free days.
Are the results what my carrier will invoice?
No. This is a planning estimate based on the dates and rates you enter. Weekends, holidays, currency conversion and carrier-specific rules can change the invoice, so always confirm with your carrier or terminal.
